Wheatley Radio - The Best Music

Wheatley Radio Broadcast Radius

Wheatley Radio was Mark Hodgkinson's bedroom radio station in the early 90's, which broadcast to his brothers' bedroom down down the landing. Originally, the station broadcast via a specially constructed long length phono lead, which utilised a reel of CW1308 telecomms cable and some soldered phono jacks. Later however, the station broadcast on 87.5 MHz from a low-power FM transmitter on the bedroom windowsill, to a quarter mile radius of the studio on Harrowden Road in Wheatley. The station was sporadically on-the-air during Sunday afternoons, with a final Christmas Day special broadcast in 1995.  A selection of archive Wheatley Radio aircheck recordings and jingles from the studio tapes are available to download on this web site.

Top Of Hour

Mark reads the weather at the top of the hour on top of the groovy weather jingle. Interesting Fact: The cassette with the original version of the weather jingle got chewed up and had to be re-produced.

During production, the Wheatley Radio jingles were recorded onto cassette tapes. Each tape had one jingle recorded on each side of the tape. The tapes were then taken apart and re-assembled so that there was no leader tape and thus the jingles would start instantly when you pressed play on the tape deck. Generally, each individual cassette tape had two versions of the same jingle on it; a full sung version on side A and a ramp version on side B. The picture left shows the original Memorex cassette tape containing the Wheatley Radio "Nickelodeon" Jingle.
